How backups protect a small business
What a backup covers, what it does not, and how restore checks work on managed plans.
A backup is a second copy of your business data kept separate from your working machine. What a backup covers
- Accidental deletion or overwrite
- Hard drive failure or hardware damage
- Ransomware and malware that locks, encrypts, or destroys files
- Theft, fire, flood, and other loss of a physical machine (off-site copy)
- Mistakes during upgrades, migrations, or new-computer setup
What a backup does not cover
- Programs must be reinstalled; licenses and app logins are not included
- Settings and configuration are usually not captured by a file backup
- Data created after the last successful backup ran cannot be recovered
- A backup does not fix weak passwords, missing updates, or open firewall rules
How we verify restores
- A backup that has never been tested is a guess, not a guarantee
- On managed plans, restore verification runs on the schedule defined in your written scope: a copy is restored to a test location and checked so we know the data opens and is usable
- Any shortfall is reported and corrected before it matters
