Email stops working: safe first steps
Checks you can safely try when email stops working, and when to contact us.
If email stops working, these checks are safe to try before contacting us.1. Confirm the internet connection
- Open a website in your browser. If web pages do not load either, the problem is usually the connection or Wi-Fi, not email
2. Try webmail
- Sign in to your email provider's website. If webmail works but your mail app does not, the issue is usually the app or its settings
3. Restart the mail app and the device
- Close the mail application completely and reopen it; if it still fails, restart the computer
4. Check the basics
- Look in the Spam or Junk folder for missing messages
- Confirm there is free storage space; a full mailbox stops new mail
- Check for password-expiry or storage notices from your provider
5. Be careful with unexpected prompts
- If a message or pop-up suddenly asks for your password, do not enter it from a link in an email; open the provider's site yourself first
- We never ask for your password by email or text
When to contact us
- Webmail works but the mail app shows send or receive errors
- Messages are missing in bulk, or contacts report bounce messages
- The account shows signs of unauthorized access (sent items you did not write, unexpected password resets)
- Your provider sent a security alert you do not understand
