Why is my computer so slow? Common causes in Lafayette homes

The usual causes of a slow computer, what you can safely check yourself, and when a diagnostic is worth the $49.

A slow computer is the most common reason people search for local IT help. The causes are repetitive, and most of them are not serious.

The usual causes, in order of frequency
1. Startup and background programs: too many things launching at sign-in, often from software you do not remember installing
2. Storage nearly full: a drive that is over 90 percent full slows down noticeably on Windows
3. Memory pressure from too many open apps and browser tabs
4. Updates interrupted or pending, or an update that failed halfway
5. Unwanted software: bundled utilities and browser extensions that consume resources
6. Failing storage, which is serious and shows up as slowness, freezing, and odd errors

What is safe to check yourself
- Confirm free disk space in File Explorer under This PC
- Note which programs launch at startup in Task Manager, Startup tab
- Restart and see whether the slowness is constant or intermittent

What not to do
- Do not install a registry cleaner or a mystery optimization tool
- Do not reinstall Windows before understanding the cause
- Do not delete files you do not recognise from disk cleanup

When a $49 diagnostic is worth it
A diagnostic is worth it when the slow behavior has lasted more than a few weeks, when you cannot tell whether the cause is software or hardware, or when a computer that matters to your work keeps freezing. The $49 is credited once toward approved repair labor on the same device, so if the answer is a repair, the diagnostic does not add to the bill.
