Wi-Fi dead zones in Lafayette homes: how to fix coverage

Why signal dies in specific rooms, how to find the real cause without buying equipment first, and when a router replacement is actually the answer.

Wi-Fi that works in the living room and fails in the office is the most common home network problem in Acadiana. The fix is usually not a new router.

The four real causes
1. Placement: the router is in one room and the problem is in another. Location beats hardware
2. Band congestion: older 2.4 GHz gear competing with modern devices on the same channel
3. Obstacles: masonry, metal, appliances, and interior walls common in homes built before 1980 in Lafayette neighborhoods
4. ISP gateway limits: a provider-supplied router with Wi-Fi disabled or in a weak default mode

How we diagnose it
- We ask where the problem happens and where the equipment lives
- We test signal strength and connection quality in the affected room rather than next to the router
- We separate Wi-Fi coverage problems from internet-connection problems, which look identical to a customer but are not
- We document findings before proposing anything

The order of fixes, cheapest first
1. Move or reorient the existing equipment
2. Change wireless channel or band
3. Enable or correct a feature that is currently limiting throughput
4. Add a properly placed access point or mesh node where coverage is genuinely needed
5. Replace the router only when the hardware is genuinely the limit

What is not included
Extended cabling and in-wall access-point installation are quoted as projects. ISP troubleshooting beyond our own equipment is referred to the provider.
